SEATTLE, Sept. 16, 2006 --- Sail Sand Point ( www.SailSandPoint.org), a non-profit community sailing organization in Seattle's Magnusson Park, has been named the winner of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association $5,000 Jeffrey D. Briggs Award.

In 2006, the Jeffrey D. Briggs Award, which annually recognizes a group or organization in the Northwest dedicated to promoting the fun, family-lifestyle of boating, will provide $4,000 in sailing scholarships for 14 area youth from Kenmore, Eckstein, Magnolia and Salmon Bay Junior High Schools participating in Sail Sand Point's learn-to-sail programs. As a part of the award, Sail Sand Point US Sailing certified instructors will receive four $250 college scholarships to recognize their ongoing efforts with the organization.

Sail Sand Point provides learn-to-sail and advanced sailing programs along with land sailing and outrigger canoe programs for area youth and adults that provide a "be safe" awareness on the water while developing an appreciation of boating.

“We appreciate the contribution and are excited for the joint effort from Sail Sand Point and the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association to promote our common goal,” said Jamie Stewart, a member of Sail Sand Point's board of directors.

Funded through the 2006 Lake Union Boats Afloat Show, the Jeffrey D. Briggs Award is a fundamental component of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association's Promote Boating Campaign and its founding mission to actively promote boating to the general public.
