Friday, Sept. 15 at the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show

SEATTLE, Sept. 15, 2006 –Looking for a great football alternative for the family this weekend? There’s something for everyone at the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show—one of the largest on-water shows on the west coast. From 17-foot affordable, trailerable boats for the first-time boater to exotic mega-yachts up to 130 feet and even free sailboat rides for the kids, the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show is great family entertainment and a chance to see if that next boat is in your future. Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under with free parking available if you buy on-line at www.BoatsAfloatShow.com. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Boats Afloat Show activities get underway on Friday with KVI 570’s John Carlson and Ken Schram broadcasting live. Later in the afternoon, The Bryan Suits Show is live from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Free boating seminars also get under way on Friday. Ranging from local topics such as saltwater salmon fishing in Washington and Gunkholing in Puget Sound to the exotic - Exploring the Virgin Islands and Exploring the Coast of Viet Nam, the free seminars are a first-hand opportunity to see the world through the eyes of Seattle’s most creative boaters.

Washington State University Professor Dr. Konstantin Matveev will demonstrate a solar powered 19-foot water craft developed by WSU students for the international Solar Splash competition. Dr. Matveev, is an international expert on advanced marine technologies with experience at Russia’s Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau, High-Speed Ship Bureau, California Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Matveev is establishing a research and development group at WSU to develop, design, build and test prototypes of advanced marine vehicles. Among these are fuel-efficient hydrofoils, air-lubricated hulls, wing-in-ground technology that utilizes aerodynamic lift for efficient operation ultra-fast boats and ventilated propulsors - a technology which helps commercial ships operate faster and more efficiently in rough seas.

The children’s life jacket giveaway continues on Friday with plenty of free life jackets for kids courtesy of Fisheries Supply and Stearns. The life jacket giveaway, which will distribute 300 free life jackets to kids 12 and under attending the show,is a part of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Children’s Water Safety Education Program in partnership with Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, U.S. Coast Guard and other marine groups.

Competition for barking rights at the Boats Afloat Show continues on day three at Chandler’s Cove with the popular Boat Show Dog Trials. Join master of canines Mark Christopher of KBSG as he calls bark-by-bark for the nautically challenged on the eight-part Chandler’s Cove course. The dog trials get underway at 2 p.m. on the lawn behind Daniels Broiler.

The Boats Afloat Show, which runs through Sunday, features over 350 sail and power boats for all budgets and lifestyles ranging from 17-foot affordable, trailerable boats to eight luxury yachts over 80 feet in length. On the exotic side, a 130-foot mega-yacht and a 32-foot personal submarine will be on exhibit -- and for sale at the Boats Afloat Show.

Located at Chandler's Cove on South Lake Union, the Boats Afloat Show is just off the I-5 Mercer Street exit. Designated parking for $5 per day is located at 5th and Mercer about five blocks west of the show near the Seattle Center. A free shuttle runs between the Boat Show and the 5th and Mercer parking lot every 15 minutes during show hours.
 
Help Ease South Lake Union Traffic – Take the Lake Union Water Taxi
Seattle's Electric Boat Company will provide water taxi service on-call and from various locations around Lake Union throughout the show, beginning one hour prior to opening and concluding one hour following closing. Cost is $5 each-way. Call 206-223-7476 to arrange for pick-up.
