Over 1,000 walk the docks on opening day of Lake Union Boats Afloat Show
SEATTLE, Sept. 14, 2006 – Over 1,000 boating enthusiasts, a new opening-day attendance record, walked the 75,000 square feet of docks at Chandler’s Cove on Wednesday exploring over 350 sail and power boats on opening day of the 2006 Lake Union Boats Afloat Show – one of the largest floating shows on the West Coast - on South Lake Union in Seattle.
Among the day one events enjoyed by boating enthusiasts, yacht brokers and boat dealers was a 30-minute Lake Union water show by Seattle’s newest fire boat, the 50-foot Engine No. 1 and live radio broadcast of the weekly Chat with Women show on KKNW 1150 AM. Also on Lake Union, the annual Pro-Am Celebrity Sailing Race featuring local water-sports Olympians and media personalities helped raise awareness for water safety, while the popular Boat Show Dog Trials brought some light-hearted competition for barking rights at Chandler’s Cove.
In Pro-Am sailboat racing on Wednesday, Olympic gold and silver medal-winning synchronized swimmer Tracie Ruiz-Conforto teamed-up with Olympic sculling coach Emil Kossev and Sail Sand Point’s Paul Stewart, a nationally ranked Laser sailor and captain of the University of Washington Sailing Team to win the annual regatta.
John Stillings an Olympic rowing silver medalist and Jordan Malloch and Olympic canoeist along with Chuck Asper, a three-time national sailing champion finished second. University of Washington rowing coach Bob Ernst and Children’s Hospital’s Dr. Linda Quan, a nationaly recognized expert on drowning, rounded out the top crews with a third-place finish.
The Olympians joined KING TV’s Jeff Renner, Seattle Times sports reporters Greg Bishop and John Boyle, Lt. Ron Owens of the United States Coast Guard and others to raise awareness for children’s water safety and the community sailing programs at Sail Sand Point.
In the Boat Show Dog Trials, Emmy, an eight-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier from Port Orchard and her human, Manuela McGee, established a Chandler's Cove course record to win on the first day of preliminaries and advance directly to Sunday's grand final.
The Port Orchard duo completed the eight-part course for the nautically challenged in just 44-seconds to fetch the win and the record. Elle, a two-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback of Seattle, and her human Kerri Haught, trailed by just one second to finish second and also advance.
Seven boat yard dogs including a Vizsla, Australian Shepherd, Samoyed and a Poodle dodged oars, fetched balls and leaped through life rings to open dog trials competition.
Nine additional “masters” and their humans are scheduled to romp at 2 p.m. on each of the remaining days of the show on the Boat Show Dog Trials course, just behind Daniel's Broiler.
On the radio, Chat with Women’s Rochelle Alhadeff and Pam Gray were all about boating as they chatted-up Seattle Magazine’s Mellisa Coffman, Jamie Peha and Crow’s Nest Compass Point’s Michelle King live on KKNW 1150 AM.
The Boats Afloat Show, which runs through Sunday, features over 350 sail and power boats for all budgets and lifestyles ranging from 17-foot affordable, trailerable boats to eight luxury yachts over 80 feet in length. On the exotic side, a 130-foot mega-yacht and a 32-foot personal submarine will be on exhibit -- and for sale at the Boats Afloat Show.
Gates open daily at 11 a.m. (10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday). Tickets, $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under, are available at www.BoatsAfloatShow.com or at the show.
